Is it possible to have social anxiety yet be involved in many activities?
Does anyone who feels awkward or anxious in social situations overcompensate and try to prove to themselves or others that they don’t have a problem by being involved in numerous activities, groups, and events?
For example, I know a guy who seems to have social anxiety, yet he is a president of a club, a brother in a fraternity, a member of an activity group, and a bunch of other things. This surprises me since I would think someone with this problem would avoid all social situations. What do you guys think?

Absolutely-I have social anxiety and am very involved in school, I was in dance, figure skating, and cheerleading for years. He probably just forces himself to do things that make him uncomfortable because they’ll benefit him, that’s how I have to think about it.
yes, that is very possible
social anxiety is displayed in a variety of ways and the avoidance strategy is the most common (but not the only one)
the guy is most likely very socially involved b/c he feels that by surrounding himself w/ people he can make the anxiety go away. however, he needs to confront the actual anxiety itself to keep it under control.
Maybe he or anyone else with this behavior believes that joining all these organizations will help them overcome their anxiety, which is admirable. Some people with social anxiety might go out of their way join all those organizations so they can masochistically feel sorry for themselves for being so awkward.
More than likely, he’s just overly concerned about what other people think of him, and so his behavior is a little off because his thoughts distract him.
