How do I explain this to my doctor….Or would he think I'm not complying with treatment?
Basically, I’m in a specialized program for gambling addiction. It was really hard to get admitted into it, because there are stringent requirements. It is also in a beautiful part of the mountains. It also has a lot of hidden perks, like counseling and all around general help in daily living.
Here is the problem: I’m kind of scared to start treatment, because it will run its course, the people might not like me, and it may eventually come to an end (discharge). The weird thing is, I’m feeling much better being IN the program, even though I haven’t even started treatment yet! I just feel so secure knowing it is there if I need it. I have felt 50% happier just knowing I’m in the program, even though I haven’t actually begun anything yet.
If I start treatment, I’m afraid I’ll get worried about what the counselors think (I have social phobia), the treatment will run its course and someday come to an end.
How do I explain to my doctor that I’m actually feeling better being IN the program, even though I haven’t even started treatment? I’m so happy I got admitted, but I want to delay the start date indefinitely, because I don’t want it to run its course, leading to discharge from the program. (If the treatment ended, I would have nothing…I’m pretty much on my own in a new city)
If the above was too verbose to understand, just answer this. How do you explain to a doctor that you are feeling better just being in a program, knowing you can start any time, and you want to delay the start date indefinitely?
(The hitch is that everyone that is admitted into the program is naturally expected to start treatment right away….Would they think it was crazy that I wanted to be "in" the program but want to delay treatment?)
i posted this q (similar) in psychology before seeing your post…thx for the feedback
(to Brandon above)

I actually get what you are saying here. But in answer to your question, I don’t think it’d fly with the doctor that you delay the start indefinitely. I think that will lead to you being out of the program just as quickly as going through it and finishing. So, I would go through the treatment, you cannot know that you will "have nothing" if it ended. You have not yet entered and completed the treatment. treatment for something like this can be scary, but in most cases ends up in improvement. Give it a go, explain to the doctor your feelings but give serious consideration to just getting on with it.
Just explain to him that you feel some type of security actually being in the program and the reason you don’t want to start it is not because you don’t want or don’t think you need the treatment, but because you don’t want that security to be taking away. Maybe he has some information he can offer like meetings they hold even after the treatment is over or counselors that can still assist you. I’m sure there are plenty of options just ask.
Sounds like the whole problem is sociological. Your gambling addiction feels like it’s under attack by this treatment coarse so it’s making you think "wow I fell better already" before you’ve even given it a chance to work. Best advice for you is just to take the treatment. Just keep in mind your not there to impress anybody. Your there to seek help for yourself and only yourself, nobody needs to like you for you to get help. If you haven’t gone to treatment, it’s impossible for the addiction to just disappear on it’s own. Trust me when I say it will raise again. Same reason doctors tell you to take ALL your medicine even if your not sick anymore. You may feel better but it’s still there waiting to get you sick again. Just trust the program and go for it. Don’t look back, don’t think about what others think of you.
I understood what u said.
Is it possible here u are not fully informed of the process of the program? By me saying that i mean, the way u are talking it is like once u have completed the program, they just throw u out on the street to fend for yourself! Thats the way u are talking.
I doubt very much that a prgram of that nature would do that to its participants.
Furthermore, once the program has ended . Is it not wise for the program organisers to have some sort of process where there is ongoing monitoring of the particpants. So you are still involved but just putting into practice what u have experienced through the program.
I think you should not ask the doctor about delaying treatment. I think you should ask the doctor this………….
Explain to the doctor your concerns and what u have said here. Without the delaying treatment bit. Then at the end say to him or her………What process is there in this program when it ends to help monitor my health and happiness ? His answer may be something you may not expect.
They may have a Buddy system where participants have each others phone numbers once the program ends so they can keep in touch with each other if they have problems etc.
So it is still keeping u in the loop , but at the same time you are out on your own. Which is where u are right now . Am i correct?
Your position right now is , you are out on your own . But in a program.
The same when it ends. you are out on your own. But in contact with a Buddy to help u with issues/equivalant to being in a program.
Thats if this program has a buddy system when it ends. I know alchoholics anonymous does. It helps them while they are in the program , the buddy system . Even after.
